- Flora
The forest of Charmes
Here we are at the top of the hill amidst hornbeam, oak and chestnut trees. Hornbeam with its ribbed trunk is characteristic of the forests in the north of the county. In the spring before the leaves grow and we hear the churping of tits, warblers and chaffinches, is the time when many plants like violets, lungworts or barren strawberries make the most of the light to poke their heads through the undergrowth. Later on in the season, the leaves offer a pleasant and cool shade.
Description
1 - Chantemerle les Blés
On leaving the car park turn left onto rue Eloi Abert then immediately right onto rue du Tonnelier. Go straight on. When you get to rue des Beaumes go onto the track opposite past a collapsed house (on the way up, after about 25 metres, lovely panoramic view over the village and the Notre Dame des Blés statue) Go along the fencing above a quarry (make sure you follow the markings here !) then an orchard as far as an isolated house where you continue ahead on the track alongside it. The trail, between orchards and woodland, takes you to the road where you turn right then continue ahead through cultures and woods for just over 1km when you reach a power transformer. Take the path to the far left amongst undergrowth and go round a field on the right. As you come out of the wood head towards a first house. Go round it then through the hamlet and down towards a road at the bottom of the gulley Charbonnier. Turn left, walk 500m then twice right before heading down towards the last houses. At the back of a shed take the path going up the slope.
2 - Champ du Mas - 228 m
Turn left onto the path leading into the woods and carry on near vineyards.
3 - Marion - 260 m
Continue on the small road on the left. After the houses carry on along the main path in the woods until you come to a crossroads. Turn right onto the road then take second turn left
4 - Les Sables
After the houses, continue ahead on the path along orchards.
5 - Les Carrières
The road on the right then the D309 to the left take you back to Chantemerle les Blés.
