LakeMouchet pond and its aquatic flora
In the the village of Chavannes, downstream from the source of the river Veaune lies Mouchet pond just the same as when it was first built in 1750 apart from the reconstruction of its dam carried away during floods. Used as a fish farm for centuries, remains have been found and preserved carefully including the breeding tank situated at the top of the farm buildings. Covered in water lilies, a beautiful aquatic plant bed can be seen when the floral tips poke their face through the water surface. Vital for aquatic life these plants are in danger cohabitating with herbiverous fish. The property belongs to the village of Chavannes and was classified in 2010 as being Espace Naturel Sensible (ENS) sensitive nature preserve by the county of Drôme. In 2014, an educational and tourist trail was introduced and attracts many walkers and nature lovers.
Description
Starting at the café, head towards the signpost Chavannes
1 - Chavannes - 193 m
Follow the signs to Mouchet on the D115 towards Chantemerle les Blés. Turn right just before the small bridge and go along the stream until you get to Mouchet pond. Take the road to the left past the château then continue ahead to the cross.
2 - Le Mouchet - 203 m
Turn right onto the tarmac lane and at the end right again towards the château. Once there follow the sandy track on the left. Carry on ahead for about 700m to the road. Turn left uphill and when you get to a farm bear right and continue alongside the wood. Go past a house, turn left on a path going through orchards until you get to a plot of vines.
3 - Bois de l'Ane - 215 m
Turn right here and once past the vine grove follow the path on the left going into the woods. When you reach a field a little further on, keep to the left. In the woods turn left then left again. Make sure you follow the yellow markings. Go down towards a farm. Follow the road then 200m further on turn left again onto a sandy path going slightly uphill. Careful, fallen leaves sometimes hide rough underfoot. Go through the woods. 3 - Bois de l'Ane - 215 m Turn right and further on, go past a farm to the road. Cross over and continue between two hedges. At the end go past a sign indicating Les Carrières. Turn left here onto the main road then cross over and take a path immediately to the right. Go under the high-voltage electric cable and continue ahead until you get to the junction.
4 - Les Carrières
Turn left onto the sandy track. A little further on turn right (overlooking rows of greenhouses) and go under the high-voltage cable. Soon the track meets up with a gravel path
5 - Les Sables - 221 m
Turn left and further on continue ahead on a tarmac lane until you get to the main road. Turn right and head towards le Mouchet.
2 - Le Mouchet - 203 m
Retrace your steps from the beginning of the trail, heading back to the starting point.

Follow the D67 from Saint Donat sur l'Herbasse towards Tain l'Hermitage then the D115 to Chavannes.
